Introduction Text
This downloadable resource explores posters from the 1950s, centred around An Tóstal and the Dutch designers working in Ireland.
Following the formation of the Free State and into the mid-twentieth century, there were debates over how Ireland should be represented and promoted—these debates were held in many spheres including art and tourism. In the 1950s, bringing tourism to Ireland grew as a national and governmental interest.
This activity will introduce students to visual analysis activities using posters designed for the An Tóstal festival and work by the Dutch designer Pieter Sluis promoting Ireland as a travel destination.

We have also provided a teacher's guide for this activity.
