The National Library of Ireland was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Edna O’Brien, one of Ireland’s most revered and influential writers.

In 2021, the National Library of Ireland (NLI) was honoured to acquire O’Brien’s most recent archive, covering the period from 2009 to 2021, which is a significant collection of manuscripts, drafts and personal correspondence that offers invaluable insights into her creative process. This collection joined her earlier papers from 2000 to 2009, which are also held at the NLI.

Reflecting on the acquisition at the time, O’Brien expressed her joy at having her papers reside in Ireland, the country that profoundly influenced her writing.

“My works are stories of place as much as people, and Ireland has long featured as a central character. It is only right that my most recent archive should find its lasting home here.”

Dr. Audrey Whitty, Director of the NLI, said:

“O’Brien fearlessly explored the complexity of women’s lives and was guided by an unwavering commitment to truth in storytelling. We are proud to keep safe on behalf of this country, the world and all generations to come her archives from 2000 to 2021, which reveal how her creative process was continuously developing.”

Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and the many people who have been inspired by her work. Suaimhneas síoraí uirthi. May she rest in peace.
