National Library of Ireland announce programme ahead of Seachtain na Gaeilge

All events are free to attend and include a mix of in-person and online as well as talks through Irish and English

The National Library of Ireland has today announced a Programme of events ahead of the Seachtain na Gaeilge festival for 2025.

Speaking at the launch of the Library’s Seachtain na Gaeilge programming, Director of Exhibitions, Learning and Programming, Dr Sinéad McCoole said: “Learning through Irish and bringing extensive Irish language holdings to new audiences is what we do. This year, the National Library of Ireland’s educators, librarians and the award-winning author Mollie Nic Céile endeavour to bring the love of learning and library together in our largest Programme ever.”

The Programme includes:

  • ‘Gaeilge agus Fáilte’: an in-person gathering over tea, coffee, and chats in Irish, focusing on the NLI’s Irish collections. This in-person event takes place twice, Tuesday 4th March and Tuesday 11th March from 11am-12pm. Location: Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again at College Green. No booking required.
  • ‘Find the Gaeilge i do chroí this Seachtain na Gaeilge’ an online talk by Molly Nic Céile, who is not a native Irish speaker, and has recently written a guide on ‘loving and living’ the Irish language. Taking place online on Wednesday, 5th March at 7pm. Attendance is free, book online at nli.ie.
  • ‘Ag Nochtadh Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann | Revealing the National Library of Ireland’: an online talk on the National Library of Ireland’s services, offerings, collections and events, including how to use the catalogue of archives. The talk is delivered in Irish. Taking place on Thursday 6th and again on Thursday 13th March. Attendance is free, book online at nli.ie.
  • ‘Naomh Bréanainn: Seanchas agus Cultas, Pádraig Ó Héalaí | Saint Brendan: Folklore and Culture’: An in-person lecture as Gaeilge in collaboration with the Folklore Society of Ireland discussing the sources of information on Saint Brendan that are available today. The talk is delivered in Irish. Taking place at the NLI on Kildare Street at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 12th March. Attendance is free, book online at nli.ie.
  • ‘Na Bailiúcháin Ghaeilge sa Leabharlann Náisiúnta’: Máire Ní Chonalláin, Assistant Keeper in the Department of Published Collections, will talk about Irish language textbooks in the NLI. Taking place online on Friday, 14th March at 10.30am to 11.30am. Attendance is free, book online at nli.ie.
