Map of Bogs District Number Four: Meath, Westmeath and Kings County (Offaly) by J.A. Jones for the Commission; NLI Call Number: 16.D.19

In Person

Explore the work of geographers and historians as they investigate the past, present and
future of some of Ireland’s most environmentally important landscapes using the maps of
the Irish Bogs Commission (1809-1813).

Charting the way in which two-hundred years of human activity have changed Ireland’s environment, this exhibition explores the historical and current impact of how we view and interact with peatlands. Created by a team of researchers drawn from Trinity College Dublin and the National University of Ireland Galway, and supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in addition to the Environmental Protection Agency, the RePEAT project makes use of the large and highly detailed maps produced by the Bogs Commission in the early 19th century , whose drawings and documents can now be found in the NLI’s collections.

On display during the exhibition are photographs taken by the joint Environmental Protection Agency and National Library of Ireland Resident Photographer 2024-25 Paula T Nolan as part of her ongoing ReViewing Ireland project, capturing a contemporary record of Ireland’s environment and people.

The exhibition will be present in the NLI for four weeks before starting to travel.
